What it tests for:
The Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) is a nonspecific test that detects inflammation in the body. It measures how quickly red blood cells settle at the bottom of a test tube over one hour — the faster they settle, the higher the level of inflammation.
Why it matters:
-
Elevated ESR may indicate chronic inflammation, autoimmune diseases, infections, or inflammatory conditions like arthritis or lupus
-
Helps monitor the severity or progression of certain inflammatory disorders
-
Often used alongside other tests like CRP (C-Reactive Protein) to give a more complete picture of systemic inflammation
Who it’s for:
Recommended for individuals experiencing unexplained fatigue, joint pain, fever, or suspected autoimmune or chronic inflammatory conditions.
